Sodium tripolyphosphate (Na₅P₃O₁₀), commonly abbreviated as STPP, is widely used in water treatment processes due to its excellent sequestrant and dispersant properties. It binds with calcium, magnesium, iron, and other metal ions in water, preventing scale formation and mineral buildup in pipelines, boilers, and industrial equipment.

In addition to acting as a water softener, STPP stabilizes metal ions in solution, improving the efficiency of detergents, corrosion inhibitors, and other treatment chemicals. It also helps in maintaining system cleanliness and optimizing the performance of reverse osmosis and other filtration systems.

STPP is valued for its high solubility, chemical stability, and compatibility with other treatment agents. While effective, its use must be controlled according to environmental and regulatory guidelines, as excess phosphates can contribute to water eutrophication.
