Sodium tripolyphosphate (Na₅P₃O₁₀), commonly known as STPP, plays a significant role in textile manufacturing processes, particularly in scouring, bleaching, and dyeing stages. Its strong sequestering ability allows it to bind with metal ions like calcium, magnesium, and iron, preventing unwanted reactions with dyes and ensuring consistent, vibrant color results.
In the scouring process, STPP helps remove natural impurities such as waxes, pectins, and oils from raw fibers, improving absorbency and preparing the fabric for uniform dye penetration. During bleaching, it enhances the efficiency of hydrogen peroxide by softening water and stabilizing the bleaching bath. It is also used in dyeing to control water hardness, improve dye dispersion, and prevent staining or uneven shades.
STPP’s high solubility, compatibility with surfactants, and ability to improve washing performance make it a key component in sustainable and high-quality textile finishing processes.
