
Sodium Nitrate (NaNO₃) is a white crystalline solid. It has a molar mass of 84.99 g/mol and a melting point of 308 °C (586 °F). Highly soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol, it is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air.

- Preservative: Prevents microbial growth, especially in cured meats like bacon, ham, and sausages.
- Agriculture:
- Fertilizer: Supplies nitrogen, essential for plant growth. Often referred to as “Chile saltpeter” when naturally sourced.

- Glass Manufacturing: Acts as a flux to lower the melting point of silica.
