Sodium nitrate

Sodium nitrate

Sodium Nitrate (NaNO₃) is a white crystalline solid. It has a molar mass of 84.99 g/mol and a melting point of 308 °C (586 °F). Highly soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol, it is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air.

Its main applications are listed below:

  1. Food Industry (Food-Grade Sodium Nitrate):
  • Preservative: Prevents microbial growth, especially in cured meats like bacon, ham, and sausages.
  1. Agriculture:
  • Fertilizer: Supplies nitrogen, essential for plant growth. Often referred to as “Chile saltpeter” when naturally sourced.
  • Soil Conditioner: Increases soil nitrate levels for crops.
  1. Industrial Uses:
  • Glass Manufacturing: Acts as a flux to lower the melting point of silica.
  • Explosives: Used in the production of gunpowder and dynamite as an oxidizing agent.
  • Metal Treatment: Helps in heat treatment processes and for surface finishing.
