Potassium carbonate (K₂CO₃) is used in the oil and gas industry for several critical applications, especially in drilling, completion fluids, and gas treatment. In drilling fluids, it serves as a densifier and pH stabilizer, helping to maintain wellbore stability and prevent corrosion of downhole equipment.
K₂CO₃ is particularly valued in water-based drilling muds used in sensitive formations where sodium-based systems are less desirable. It also acts as a shale inhibitor, reducing clay swelling and dispersion, which minimizes formation damage and improves drilling efficiency.
In natural gas treatment, potassium carbonate is used in the CO₂ and H₂S removal process via the “hot carbonate process”, where it absorbs acidic gases to purify the natural gas stream.
Its high solubility, low corrosiveness, and environmental friendliness make potassium carbonate a preferred alternative in demanding upstream operations.
