Carboxymethyl cellulose

Carboxymethyl cellulose

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a critical additive in the oil and gas industry, especially in drilling fluid (mud) formulations. As a viscosity modifier, fluid loss reducer, and stabilizer, CMC improves the performance and efficiency of drilling operations in both onshore and offshore environments.

In drilling fluids, CMC acts as a thickener and fluid loss control agent, forming a thin, low-permeability filter cake on the walls of the borehole. This prevents excessive fluid penetration into the formation, maintaining borehole integrity and reducing formation damage. CMC also helps suspend solids in the mud, improving cuttings transport to the surface.

CMC’s performance remains stable across a wide range of temperatures, pressures, and salinity, making it suitable for deep wells and harsh drilling conditions. It is also used in cementing, completion, and fracturing fluids, where it contributes to rheology control and particle suspension.

Because it is non-toxic, biodegradable, and water-soluble, CMC is a preferred choice for environmentally responsible drilling operations, especially in regions with strict environmental regulations.
