Aluminium sulphate, commonly referred to as alum, is widely used in the paper industry, especially in the manufacturing of paper from mechanical pulp and recycled fibers. Its primary role is as a sizing agent and fixative. When added to the pulp, aluminium sulphate reacts with rosin or synthetic sizing agents to control the paper’s absorbency and improve ink resistance. It also helps retain fine particles, fillers, and sizing materials during sheet formation, improving the overall quality, strength, and printability of the paper. Furthermore, aluminium sulphate aids in pH control and improves drainage on the paper machine. Its multifunctional properties and compatibility with both acidic and neutral papermaking processes make it a key chemical in modern papermaking.
